As we cover more walls with wallpaper there seems to be a choice, do we choose an understated design or should we make a bold statement? There are arguments for both but here we focus upon the more low-key option: woven textural coverings and gentler designs in softer tones.
Many choose this direction as they feel that they will not tire so quickly and that art and other design elements will be easier to arrange. Again this is debatable but since we have some wonderful wall-coverings that suit the more delicate eye we thought it was timely to profile some.

Texture
How much do we need? Too little and you might as well paint but with too much it can get loud and belong with the ‘bold-statement-crowd’. Many woven papers have a strong horizontal line, this means that there will be an obvious join between panels. One solution is to use beading as in the images below, or you can embrace it, the beauty being where the panels join. This is especially true with a fine weave, without the seams the wall could look a little unremarkable. With the woven wall-coverings below from ROA Handwoven and Casamance we look carefully at texture.

ROA Handwoven
Harking from Indonesia these sustainable papers are made from natural fibres such as abaca, rattan and rice paper. Crafted in South East Asia ROA’s designs resonate beautifully in the region, it is as if this is where they belong. Left and above, by Studio Daminato, tiny knots in the rattan add a little excitement when you are close up, and they make this paper perfect at a distance.

A little shine can add the spice, Wai, above looks like mosaic tiles.

Here a rice paper, called Skalen, has a fine string running vertically.
Casamance Wall-Coverings
Designed in France Casamance have a large and diverse selection of elegant and very contemporary designs. All are high performance and fire retardant. They cleverly weave and use indulgent mixes of different fibres to create fascinating textures.

Add in some character with Amboise. This is a jacquard weave which includes rattan plus a tad of pretty lurex fibres that make this sophisticated covering truly lovely.

Amboise comes in five colourways and when in darker tones it becomes busier but we love its woven blotchy-ness, oh and the well placed Tom Ford book too…

Halana, above, has a graphic pattern that works brilliantly on the wall, but really only the tone-on-tone cream fits our brief being a subtle paper, It gently flows across the room, you can easily place your art upon it and put it on multiple walls. The browner colours are so funky together that we had to add it in but perhaps it has more of an opinion?
Mural Wall-Coverings
We have mural designs by Glamora, Emma Hayes, Timorous Beasties and Materialised. Murals can be powerful and so useful in many spaces from homes, hotels, workspaces and restaurants.

Glamora
Murals by design should be strong and can tell a story, and Glamora, especially, has some wonderful toned down designs – there are so many that we could not possibly fit them all in, so here is few on their various base coverings.
The above is from Glamora’s Komorebi collection. Inspired by a Japanese aesthetic there are themes of harmony, balance and well-being, Designed to create a calm ambiance Komorebi is printed upon GlamPure, an organic base paper. All designs evoke the Washi technique of Japanese paper making, and there are sixteen designs, either abstract or representations of plants and nature.

The Divina Collection was launched at the Milan Salone this year. It has a warm neutral palette with gold, brass and platinum highlights. Divina is opulent and reminiscent of the Art Deco era. Created by the research team at Glamora designs are printed on the luxurious GlamSatin base. The result is a shimmering silk like finish made from mix of viscose fabric and mineral powders.

A paper called GlamSatin: iridescent embossing reflects the light, creating movement and shadows. It is delicate yet visually intense. Petals and tropical leaves seem to blow in the wind creating an ambiance of understated luxury.

The Creative Collection is where you will find the majority of Glamora’s designs, with new designs every year there are now twelve chapters offering a myriad of designs. You can see them all on-line at Glamora’s excellent and most inspirational website. Print on either high quality vinyl or on a fine cellulose based non woven paper.

Glamora designs will be bespoke printed to fit your space perfectly, the scale can be altered or the design cropped for the height. All designs have a nine metre repeat.
